At Louisenlund they have done away with classrooms and traditional teaching and replaced it with the Louisenlund pedagogy of personalised education and holistic personal development. In small learning groups and with intensive pedagogical support from personal mentors, students work independently on learning content and take responsibility for their educational journey.
This pedagogical approach is realised in award-winning school buildings. Architecture plays an important role in the Louisenlund concept. With the new Learning and Research Centre and the Acacia Ring, the students experience modern learning and living environments. The bright rooms are tailor-made for the new Louisenlund pedagogy.
Open learning spaces, flexible seminar rooms and modern laboratories characterise the Learning and Research Centre. With a biotechnological S1 laboratory, an observatory and a research ship, we make theoretical learning content tangible. Students use the open learning spaces for individual study periods, known as studio times. The seminar rooms for in-depth input phases are also designed to be adaptable to the learning content and the needs of students and teachers.
"Learning by doing" characterises the way we work in seminars, in Studio Times, in the guilds and in the residential areas of the boarding school. Strengthening the co-construction of knowledge and the ability of students to work in a team is the central aim of our learning opportunities. Cooperative learning takes place in seminars. Students work on problem-based tasks and collaborative projects during studio times in the open learning areas, specialist areas and in the guilds.
… play an important role in the holistic development of the individual, and nature experience, character development and social responsibility are firmly anchored in Louisenlund's pedagogy. The school therefore offers a wide range of activities and sports. Sailing is a particular highlight and an integral part of the educational programme. The campus, picturesquely situated on the banks of a Baltic Sea fjord, has its own safe sailing harbour. Here, under the watchful eye of experienced sailing instructors, students discover the magic of wind energy and the art of sailing.
The unique educational campus at Louisenlund consists of more than 35 buildings. Boarders live in single or double rooms in different houses, which provide them with a home away from home. In the common areas, they develop a shared basis for living together, providing both structure and privacy.
They live with houseparents who support them and treat them as equals. The boarding school focuses on healthy, balanced, nutritious and daily fresh food, prepared with local and seasonal quality products.
The school follows the regular holiday schedule for state schools in Schleswig-Holstein. The houses are closed during the summer and Christmas holidays.
